Open Caption Finder by deafFLIX (“we,” “our,” or “us”) is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and safeguard your information when you use our app and website.

Information We Collect

Location Data

Approximate Location: With your permission, we request your device's location coordinates (at city-level accuracy, not precise GPS) to find theaters within 25 miles of you. You may also manually enter a city or ZIP code instead.
How We Use It: Your coordinates are sent to our server to search for nearby theaters. General location data (city-level) may be retained to analyze regional demand trends (see Data Sharing below).
When We Store Location: If you submit a report, feedback, heart, or movie request, your general location (city-level coordinates) is stored with your submission to help us verify reports and understand regional demand.
Third-Party Location Services: If you type a city or ZIP code, your search query is sent to HERE Technologies to convert it to coordinates. See their privacy policy below.

Device Identifier

We generate a random, anonymous identifier (UUID) stored on your device to sync your hearts across sessions.
When you heart a showtime, your device ID and general location (city, coordinates) are stored with the heart.
This ID is not linked to your name, email, or any personal information.
This ID cannot be used to track you across other apps or websites.

IP Address

We collect a hashed (one-way encrypted) version of your IP address for spam prevention and rate limiting.
The original IP address is not stored. The hash cannot be reversed to reveal your IP.

Search History

When you search for a location, your search queries are sent to HERE Technologies (our location search provider) to provide autocomplete suggestions.

Usage Data

Product Interactions: When you heart a showtime or submit a movie request (via “What OC do you want to see?”), we record the movie title, theater name (if applicable), and general location (city-level).
This data is linked to your anonymous device ID but not to your personal identity.

Customer Support Data

Feedback and Reports: If you submit feedback or report a missing/incorrect showtime, we collect the information you provide (theater name, movie, description).
Debugging Information: When you submit a report, we may also collect your device type, app version, and current screen for troubleshooting purposes.
Contributor Name: If you choose to provide a name when submitting a showtime and we verify it, you get a shoutout and your name appears on our contributor leaderboard (top 10). This is entirely optional.

Attribution Data

When you interact with the app (submit reports, hearts, or requests), we may record how you discovered the app (e.g., “app store”, “social media”).
This helps us understand which outreach efforts are effective.

Analytics Data

We log open caption showtimes that appear in search results to track availability trends over time.
This data includes movie titles, theater names, showtimes, and dates, but is not linked to individual users.

How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to:

Display open caption movie showtimes at theaters near you
Remember your hearted showtimes across sessions
Understand demand for open caption screenings in different areas
Identify trends and gaps in open caption availability
Improve our app and respond to reported issues

Data Sharing

WE DO NOT SELL YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION.

We do not collect names, emails, phone numbers, or account information. You cannot be personally identified from the data we collect.

We may share aggregated, anonymized data with movie studios, theater chains, and accessibility organizations. Examples:

“500 people in Los Angeles requested open captions for this movie”
“Open caption showtimes in Nashville are viewed 3x more than average”

This aggregated data cannot identify you as an individual.

Third-Party Services

HERE Technologies: Receives your location search queries to provide autocomplete. Privacy policy
Google Analytics: Collects anonymized website usage data (pages visited, general location, device type). Opt out here
Theater Websites: When you tap “Get Tickets,” you are directed to the theater's website, which has its own privacy policy.

Tracking

WE DO NOT TRACK YOU ACROSS OTHER APPS OR WEBSITES.

The device identifier we generate is used only within our app to remember your favorites. It is not shared with advertisers or used for cross-app tracking.

Data Retention & Deletion

We retain interaction data (hearts, movie requests, reports, and feedback) to analyze trends over time.
You may request deletion of your data by contacting us at screenings@deafflix.com
Upon request, we will delete all data associated with your device identifier within 30 days.

Children's Privacy

Our app is rated 4+ and is suitable for all ages. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. The app does not require account creation or collection of names, emails, or other identifying information from any user.

California Privacy Rights (CCPA)

If you are a California resident, you have the right to:

Request deletion of your data
Opt out of the sale of personal information (we do not sell personal information)
